Completed Projects

August 08, 2014
Several projects emanate from this assessment of the grid and they are varied in nature, consisting from refurbishment of existing substations, reinstalling underground cables to building new feeders, to name a few.
Within the lot allocated to NEU, the projects executed so far consisted of:

Substation related works:

Substations are the connecting stage of the power distribution work and their role is to transform the Medium Voltage (15,000V or 11,000V), coming from the primary stations, into Low Voltage (220V or 380V) that can be supplied and used by the customers.

In Lot 3, there are around 3,000 private and public substations that distribute electricity to around 600,000 customers. Many of the existing substations were overloaded and required upgrading in addition to new substations needed to supply the increasing number of subscribers.

      Types of Projects:

  • Refurbishing existing substations, which translates into renovating the structure of the substation and its equipment; installing a new transformer or upgrading the existing transformer if the need arises; cable laying; equipping the substation with all the needed safety requirements.
  • Building new substations: this typically takes place when either the station is overloaded with too many users, or when the network does not reach certain remote villages. Substations could either be public (i.e. for end-users) or private (i.e. for a hospital, a plant or a compound).
  • Connecting and energizing new substations: this task is the last step performed by EDL in order to activate and place the substation on the grid after all the works are completed by NEU, such was the case in Hadath Karout; Barajneh al Tourath; Barajneh al Qalb; Odayme; Chmeiss, to name a few.

Feeders Construction and Refurbishment:

A feeders’ main role is the transmission of power from the primary station (such as Aramoun, Jamhour, Wadi Jilo…) to the substations that would in turn distribute the power to the end users. NEU’s assessment revealed that, in order to efficiently transmit the power from the primary stations to the substations, several feeders needed maintenance and new ones needed to be constructed.

For that, NEU undertook the following activities:

Installing new MV (Medium Voltage) feeders (e.g. in Hazmieh) and constructing new MV feeders (e.g. in Tyri, Ain Ibel, Jezzine, Majdelyoun, Hariss, Kfar Rammen).
Reinforcing and upgrading existing feeders as is the case in Dar al Fiker; Norge Hreik; Rassoul, Odayme; Al Ayatam; Zeki; Hazmieh; Khadamet, Hamoud, Bramieh

In other cases, the existing feeders needed maintenance by replacing worn and outdated parts in the existing feeders such as in Ain Ibel; Jowaya, Zefta.

Cables installation supports the above projects, in addition to being an intrinsic part of other projects, and consists in:
Installing new cables and marking their location.
Repairing old worn-out cables.

Geographical area of implementation:

Above projects took place in Lot 3 which encompasses Chiah area and this covers Chiah, Baabda, Hazmieh, Choueifat and Aramoun; as well as South Lebanon which covers Bint Jbeil, Jwaya; Jezzine, Saida, Nabatieh, Zahrani, Sour, Hasbaya.

Achievements:

NEU has so far installed 20kms of cables. Built 270 new substations (both for private and public usage). Refurbished 330 existing substations. As well as constructing 34 new feeders throughout our area of mandate.
