Based on the guidelines of the Global Investment Plan, NEUC developed various construction projects thoroughly designed to maximize cost benefit by targeting the greatest number of customers and ensuring the shortest payback period for EDL.
After the grid assessment activities, NEUC focused on improving the general condition of the grid by building new feeders and substations to relieve the existing ones from their overloaded condition in some cases, and worn out condition in others, which would ultimately reduce the repetitive faults on the grid.
The main role of a feeder is the transmission of power from the primary to the substations that would in turn distribute the power to the end users. In order to efficiently transmit power from the primary stations to the substations NEUC is undertaking the following activities:

• Installing new MV (Medium Voltage) feeders and constructing new MV feeders.
• Reinforcing and upgrading existing feeders.
• In other cases, the existing feeders needed maintenance by replacing worn out and outdated parts in the existing feeders.

Cable installation supports the above projects, in addition to being an intrinsic part of other projects, and consists of:
• Installing new cables and marking their location.
• Repairing old worn-out cables.

NEUC also works on renovating the medium and low voltage grids, aiming to improve the quality of the electricity supplied by adjusting the voltage delivered to the end user.
Substations are the connecting stage of the power distribution work and their role is to transform Medium Voltage (15,000V or 11,000V), coming from the primary stations, into Low Voltage (220V or 380V) that can be supplied and used by the customers.

In our area of operation, there are around 3,000 private and public substations that distribute electricity to around 400,000 customers. Many of the existing substations were overloaded and required upgrading in addition to new substations that were needed to supply the increasing number of subscribers. Therefore, NEUC’s tasks also include:
• Refurbishing existing substations: which translates into renovating the structure of the substation and its equipment; installing a new transformer or upgrading the existing transformer if the need arises, cable laying, equipping the substation with all the needed safety requirements.
• Building new substations: this typically takes place when either the station is overloaded with too many users, or when the network does not reach certain remote villages. Substations could either be public (i.e. for end-users) or private (i.e. for a hospital, a plant or a compound).
• Connecting and energizing new substations: this task is the last step performed by EDL in order to activate and place the substation on the grid after all the works are completed by NEUC.

In parallel to the Global Investment Plan, and due to our understanding of the urgent needs of the power grid in our area of mandate, NEUC initiated the execution of 44 projects that represented the first batch of crucial projects that were required to relieve the network of the toughest bottlenecks. These projects have had a noticeably positive impact on the quality of the network and the electricity supplied.
